Expo 2020, Dubai - Republic of Korea Pavilion
At Expo 2020 Dubai, the Republic of Korea Pavilion stood out not only for its striking visual identity but also for its bold narrative centred around mobility, innovation, and cultural dynamism. Located in the Mobility District, the pavilion was a powerful expression of the nation’s technological prowess and evolving global presence.
Designed by the Korean architect Moon Hoon in collaboration with SERI (Space Group of Korea) and exhibition design studio Kwangho Lee & Company, the pavilion fused architectural experimentation with digital storytelling. Its distinctive exterior featured an array of rotating multicoloured cubes, arranged in a spiralling, futuristic form that shifted in appearance as visitors moved around the structure. This kinetic façade, alive with light and motion, served as a metaphor for Korea’s perpetual transformation and its central role in shaping the future of smart mobility.
Inside, the experience unfolded through a carefully choreographed journey. Immersive media installations guided visitors through Korea’s advancements in AI, robotics, and sustainable transportation, while also offering glimpses into the country’s rich cultural heritage. One of the most memorable features was a multi-sensory ramp that wrapped around the building’s core, combining visuals, sounds, and animations to create a vibrant and futuristic promenade experience.
Beyond the technology, the pavilion also presented Korea as a society in motion — a place where tradition and innovation coexist, and where urban life, digital culture, and personal creativity converge. From augmented reality experiences to collaborative robotics, the exhibition invited visitors to imagine a future shaped by human-centred design and dynamic mobility ecosystems.
The Republic of Korea Pavilion successfully captured the essence of a nation constantly evolving — a hub of innovation grounded in history but propelled by imagination. Its blend of design, interactivity, and storytelling made it one of the most memorable architectural and experiential highlights of Expo 2020 Dubai.
