IWAN Pavilion, Dubai Design District
The Iwan Pavilion merges traditional Islamic architectural designs, inspired by the Iwan and Muqarnas, with contemporary materials.
Winning the Tanween Foldable Pavilion Challenge, Iwan is a collaborative effort between the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture (Ithra), architectural practice Mamou Mani Studio, and production partner ABYWAT, a leading GCC company specializing in various finishing and furnishing materials.
Crafted by emerging Saudi architects Abdulqader Alsuwaidan, Nawaf Alghamdi, Hayat Almousa, and Lama Dardas, Iwan draws heavily from Islamic architecture, specifically the 'Iwan,' known for its transitional space, and ‘Muqarnas,’ an ornamental form.
This open installation consists entirely of meticulously shaped aluminium sheets, creating an intricate and visually striking composition that abstractly embodies Muqarnas patterns. The manipulated sheets enhance the structure’s details, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that invites audiences into the space.
The pavilion pays homage to Islamic design principles and showcases aluminium’s versatility as a modern material. As a symbolic gateway, it offers a contemporary interpretation of cultural aesthetics, blending traditional elements with modern design for a culturally resonant and immersive experience.
